A unique part of the Bayfield experience for more than forty years ....
Highland Valley Farm was established when we settled near Bayfield to raise a family in 1977. A knowledge of beekeeping and honey production we brought with us. We were introduced to raspberry horticulture by our Bayfield predecessors. Blueberry production we pioneered by establishing the first commercial planting of winter-hardy blueberry varieties in northern Wisconsin. The production of red and black currants and maple syrup are our more recent enterprise additions.
Over the years we have become recognized for our efforts in promoting sustainable family farm agriculture, our stewardship of the land, horticultural innovations, and superb products. In 2003, Highland Valley Farm was the first farm selected for protection by the Bayfield Township Farmland Preservation Program. Under this program, a conservation easement sold to the municipality and to the USDA, monitored by the Landmark Conservancy, protects the farm from any future subdivision and non-farm development. More recently, all three of our adult children have returned to partner with their parents in the farm venture. Our family enjoys sharing the beauty of Bayfield and the bounty of our crops with the many people who visit Highland Valley Farm every year.
Highland Valley Farm is a "sustainable farm" member of Food Alliance, a coalition of farmers, consumers, scientists, grocers, processors, distributors, and environmentalists working together to ensure "Good Food for a Healthy Future". As a non-profit national organization, Food Alliance provides independent third party audit and certification of member farms to ensure that food is grown in environmentally & socially responsible ways. Food Alliance growers are committed to systems and philosophies of sustainable agriculture that emphasize protecting and enhancing natural resources, using alternatives to pesticides, and caring for the health and well being of farm workers and rural communities. Highland Valley Farm received the annual "Keeper of the Vision" award from Food Alliance-Midwest in 2007.
Highland Valley Farm also has been a cooperator in University of Wisconsin fruit research trials, a past member of the Minnesota Fruit & Vegetable Growers Association, the Wisconsin Berry Growers Association, the Wisconsin Honey Producers Association, the Wisconsin Maple Syrup Producers Association, and the Farmers Union. In 2010, Highland Valley Farm joined with several other local food producers to form the Bayfield Foods Cooperative--a collaboration to promote and market locally produced food.
