MAPLE SYRUP SEASON: A SURE SIGN OF SPRING!
Following the coldest winter at Bayfield in more than 25 years, the snow is finally beginning to thaw. As the sun moves higher in the sky each day, the sweet sap of our maple trees begins to rise, and the first harvest of a new farming season at HIGHLAND VALLEY FARM is upon us. The production of Maple Syrup is a "rite of spring" for our family and our syrup partners. A reunion of friends, coffee and pancakes in the camp kitchen, the hard but rewarding work of gathering sap on snow shoes, the smells of wood smoke and boiling syrup, and long days tending the evaporator --while soaking up the first warm rays of Spring!
Maple syrup, in a variety of jar sizes under our attractive new label, is now available for purchase at the farm. As our sales room is not staffed at this time of year, call ahead to be sure a family member will be available to greet you.

We are currently hiring people to help us with the berry harvest again this summer. Most positions require a balance of picking berries alternating with sorting and packing berries. A couple of "customer service" positions are also available for our retail operations. Pay is above minimum wage. College students with an interest in local and sustainable food production are preferred. Older high school students and others may also apply. Contact MAGDALEN at [email protected] for more information and application.

PICK-YOUR-OWN BERRIES AT HIGHLAND VALLEY FARM
Summer is here and berry picking season is under way. Raspberry picking began on Saturday, July 26 and will continue for about four weeks. Raspberries are limited this year. We advise checking this site for conditions and come early in the day when we open to get on. We plan to be be open for raspberry picking at least three days per week.
Blueberry picking started on Saturday, August 2. Blueberries are plentiful this season--you will not have any trouble getting on when we are open. Our late spring makes for a later start than most of the state, however berry crops favor cooler weather with lots of moisture--that's why important berry production regions are usually near large bodies of water in cooler temperate climates--like Bayfield on Lake Superior. The berries this year are large, sweet, and plentiful!
Not only do berries taste good, they are good for you--packed with vitamins and anti-oxidants. Best of all, Berry picking is healthy fun--a great way to spend a day with friends and family. Our fields are clean, safe, green, and inviting. There will always be ice water, clean toilets, close parking and shaded picnic facilities. Our pleasant, well trained staff provides friendly, helpful customer service. Ready picked blueberries are always available in season at our on-farm store.
OPEN for picking Tues.-Sat. from 8:30am-4:00pm, Sundays from Noon-4:00pm, and closed on Mondays.*
*These hours may vary due to weather and field conditions. Updates are posted to our website and telephone answering service daily.
